Why specify LED Driver
Match the Output Voltage
The driver output voltage must match the strip's rated input voltage; constant-current drivers should only be used with compatible LED modules or fixtures.
Confirm the Connected Load
Calculate load from the strip model, watts per meter and total connected length, then verify against the exact driver datasheet and derating conditions.
Select the Dimming Method
Confirm whether the project requires non-dimmable, phase-cut, 0-10V, 1-10V, or DALI control; DMX512, SPI and wireless systems normally require a separate controller or decoder.
Verify Installation and Documents
Check AC input, installation location, ambient temperature, enclosure and wiring method, plus model, wiring diagram, certification coverage and warranty conditions.
Questions
Does an LED strip require a constant-voltage or constant-current driver?
Most voltage-driven LED strips require a constant-voltage power supply that matches the strip's rated input voltage. Constant-current drivers should only be used with LED modules or fixtures designed for a specified current and voltage range. Confirm the load type before selecting a driver.
Can any 24V power supply be used with a 24V LED strip?
No. The output voltage must match, but buyers must also check the connected load, AC input, dimming method, ambient temperature, enclosure, wiring, certification and installation requirements. A matching voltage alone does not confirm complete compatibility.
How should buyers calculate the required LED driver wattage?
Calculate the connected strip load using the selected model's rated watts per meter and the length connected to each driver output. Final sizing should follow the exact driver's continuous-output rating, derating requirements, circuit arrangement and installation conditions.
Is the 80% load rule mandatory for every LED driver?
No. It is a common planning approach, not a universal requirement. Some drivers can operate at full rated load under defined conditions, while others require derating based on ambient temperature, input voltage, enclosure or mounting method. Always follow the exact model datasheet.
What is the difference between phase-cut, 0-10V, 1-10V and DALI dimming?
Phase-cut uses a compatible mains-side dimmer and driver. The 0-10V and 1-10V methods use analog control signals, but their circuit behavior and switch-off functions can differ. DALI uses a digital control bus. Compatibility must be confirmed by driver model and control system.
Does an IP67 driver make the complete LED strip system suitable for wet locations?
Not automatically. The driver's IP rating applies only to the tested driver enclosure. Cable entries, connectors, junction boxes, dimmers, controllers and the LED strip require their own suitable protection and installation method. Final use must follow the product ratings and local requirements.
